NITDA, NBC transformation alliance: A new digital era for Nigerian media

At the Tech Revolution Africa 2026 conference, addressing a group of Africa’s top innovators at the Landmark event centre was a high-profile meeting where Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, NITDA’s director general, hosted Charles Ebuebu, his NBC counterpart. Their discussions covered more than just collaboration; they also addressed the future of how media and technology intersect, as well as how the government’s regulatory machinery must keep up with increasing digital transformation.

This conversation was not a trivial formality. It signalled institutional acknowledgement that the broadcasting and digital technology sectors, which were long considered independent spheres, are now inextricably linked and must advance together rather than in isolation.

Dr. Aristotle Onumo, Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, represented the NITDA DG in a fireside chat titled “Building Nigeria’s Digital Journey: Policy, Infrastructure, and the Road Ahead“. He outlined NITDA’s strategic approach to digital transformation, which is based on enabling policies, resilient infrastructure, and people-driven innovation.

The cooperation builds on NITDA’s broader reform strategy, which the agency has been pursuing both within and outside. Mr Abdullahi has described NITDA’s strategy as based on three pillars: people, processes, and technology, emphasising the importance of human ability and efficient systems in driving significant change.

The Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, received his counterpart, DG of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Mr. Charles Ebuebu,

Inuwa emphasised the importance of the digital economy to national development, stating that “the digital economy is fundamental for job creation, global competitiveness, and economic growth,” and that Nigeria is on the right track despite current infrastructure gaps. According to him, progress in recent years has been largely driven by policies that encourage rather than stifle innovation.

Regarding data sovereignty, he stated that NITDA is working with global hyperscalers to ensure that Nigeria’s data is hosted locally.

“Talent can be anywhere in the world, but data infrastructure must be built here,”

he said. While outlining why localising data centres is vital for Nigeria’s data economy and digital sovereignty. He added that the Nigeria Data Protection Act has provided a strong legal foundation for safeguarding personal data and strengthening trust in the digital ecosystem.

The significance

What makes the NBC cooperation so appealing is how it situates media supervision inside the larger digital transformation framework. Mr Ebuebu, recognising the rapid convergence of media and technology, noted that the collaboration was overdue. The collaboration aims to help both organisations respond more effectively to emerging issues in media, data governance, and Nigeria’s digital future.

They expect that by institutionalising cooperation, they would be able to improve information transfer, boost local media growth, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and promote content production that reflects and protects national cultural interests. In essence, this is about providing the NBC with the digital tools, capacities, and strategic orientations required to regulate media in a world where content is created, distributed, and consumed through digital platforms.

Huge takeaway

In conclusion, the NITDA–NBC alliance on digital transformation and media oversight is a testament to the growing recognition that Nigeria’s future depends on institutions that can navigate the complexities of the digital world.

If successful, it could serve as a model for how government agencies can work together across domains to leverage digital transformation in a strategic, inclusive, and sustainable manner
